The requirements for the Certified Forensic Nurse program

To become a Certified Forensic Nurse, CFN, an applicant must meet all membership criteria set up by the ABFN and ACFEI. CFN candidates must complete the CFN application form and clinical experience validation form, submit all required paperwork and costs, and effectively complete the certification examination. To become eligible to be involved in the CFN examination, a candidate should the following:

1. Complete the CFN application and clinical experience validation form, and submit it back to ACFEI Attn: CFN Dept, by fax to 417-881-4702 or by mail to 2750 E. Sunshine, Springfield, MO 65804
2. Practiced for at least 3 years as a registered nurse in the US, or as a first-level general nurse in the country of licensure
3. Currently hold a full and unrestricted registered nurse license (RN) in the US or its territories or have a licenser as a first-level general nurse in the country you currently practice in.
4. Completed a formal didactic educational program in forensic nursing successfully.  This can include a 3 hour undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate course that includes a minimum of 40 contact hours in the area of forensic nursing. 
   
5. Be an ACFEI member that is in good standing
6. Provide 2 proffesional references on the CFN  application
7. Validate your current forensic nurse competency with supporting documentation (a clinical experience validation form) signed by the appropriate authority, such as employer, nursing supervisor, or forensic mentor.
